She was close friends with Muhammad Ali and worked alongside Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. Her legacy lives on in her words. She has taught so many of us to be more human, more loving, and more accepting of the world around us. She has shown us how to be more courageous in fighting for what is right. Her words have a way of making us look deep inside ourselves and evaluate how we are living our lives.

Angelou was a powerful woman who commanded respect. When she spoke, you listened. She left behind a legacy of love, respect, and compassion along with an array of awards and accolades. She was the first African American and the first woman to recite a poem at the inauguration of a US president – “On the Pulse of Morning” for Bill Clinton. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Arts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom – an award also bestowed upon Arthur Ashe and Rosa Parks.
