Sporting Icons. American heroes.
“There’s not an American in this country free until every one of us is free.” –Jackie Robinson
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942. He broke the color barrier in baseball in 1947. But in between, in 1944, Robinson — a member of the 761st “Black Panthers” Tank Battalion — fought for his rights. He refused to sit in the back of an Army bus that summer, resulting in his arrest. It was an incident that followed him into the Major Leagues, when he changed the course of history with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
