“In his time, Joe Louis was one of the only fighters that captivated not just Black America but white America as well. He had the support of both and was liked by everyone. He wasn’t an antagonist. He was the antithesis of Ali, patriotic to a fault.

When I think about Joe, I think of a fighter that is everything right about the sport in terms of how he represented boxing, but he was also everything that was wrong with the sport. He was too accommodating — he cared too much about helping other people, even more than himself. At the end of his career, it was very evident that the government didn’t look out for him the way that he looked out for them. It was also clear that the people he looked out for didn’t look out for him. He gave more to the people around him than he did himself.

In that way, he provided polarizing warnings for future fighters that I thought about in my own career. Sometimes our icons are like that. Sometimes there are things we’ve got to learn from them so we don’t repeat the mistakes.” – Andre Ward
